The 175th Anniversary of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (observed)
April 24, 2022 — Second Sunday of Easter
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) believes, teaches and confesses faith in Jesus Christ as taught in the Scriptures and Lutheran Confessions. For 175 years, the Holy Spirit has kept us in the one true faith and still continues to gather sinners into the Holy Christian Church by grace through faith — all on account of Christ. As we give thanks for our Synod’s founding on April 26, 1847, we rejoice in the 175th-anniversary theme, “Only Jesus: No Other Name,” based on Acts 4:12. Until Jesus comes, the LCMS will continue to trust in, teach and preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

EASTER HYMN “Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing” 475
Good Christian friends, rejoice and sing!
Now is the triumph of our King!
To all the world glad news we bring:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
The Lord of life is ris’n this day;
Bring flow’rs of song to strew His way;
Let all the world rejoice and say:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Praise we in songs of victory
That love, that life that cannot die,
And sing with hearts uplifted high:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Your name we bless, O risen Lord,
And sing today with one accord
The life laid down, the life restored:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
VERSICLES 219
O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth will declare Your praise. Psalm 51:15
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
Make haste to help me, O Lord. Psalm 70:1
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Praise to You, O Christ. Alleluia!
PSALMODY 220
Blessed be God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
O come, let us worship Him.
VENITE “O Come, Let Us Sing” 220
O come, let us sing to the Lord.
Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving,
Let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise.
For the Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods.
The deep places of the earth are in His hands;
The strength of the hills is His also.
The sea is His, for He made it, and His hand formed the dry land.
O come, let us worship and bow down,
Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.
For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture
And the sheep of His hand. Psalm 95
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Blessed be God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
O come, let us worship Him.

P: Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts!
Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!
A: Let them praise the name of the LORD!
For he commanded and they were created.
P: And he established them forever and ever;
he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.
M: Praise the LORD from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and mist,
stormy wind fulfilling his word!
W: Mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars!
Beasts and all livestock,
creeping things and flying birds!
M: Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
W: Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!
A: Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
his majesty is above earth and heaven.
P: He has raised up a horn for his people,
praise for all his saints,
for the people of Israel who are near to him.
A: Praise the LORD!
OFFICE HYMN “Jesus Shall Reign” 832
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
Does its successive journeys run;
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
To Him shall endless prayer be made,
And endless praises crown His head;
His name like sweet perfume shall rise
With ev’ry morning sacrifice.
People and realms of ev’ry tongue
Dwell on His love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on His name.
Blessings abound where’er He reigns:
The pris’ners leap, unloose their chains,
The weary find eternal rest,
And all who suffer want are blest.
Let ev’ry creature rise and bring
Honors peculiar to our King;
Angels descend with songs again,
And earth repeat the loud amen.
SCRIPTURE READING Acts 5:12-20
Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.”
O Lord, have mercy on us.
Thanks be to God.
SCRIPTURE READING Revelation 1:4-18
John to the seven churches that are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”
O Lord, have mercy on us.
Thanks be to God.
SCRIPTURE READING John 20:19-31
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
O Lord, have mercy on us.
Thanks be to God.

SERMON
CANTICLE “We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God” 941
We praise You and acknowledge You,
O God, to be the Lord,
The Father everlasting,
by all the earth adored.
To You all angel powers cry aloud,
the heavens sing,
The cherubim and seraphim
their praises to You bring:
“O holy, holy, holy
Lord God of Sabaoth;
Your majesty and glory
fill the heavens and the earth!”
The band of the apostles
in glory sing Your praise;
The fellowship of prophets
their deathless voices raise.
The martyrs of Your kingdom,
a great and noble throng,
Sing with the holy Church
throughout all the world this song:
“O all-majestic Father,
Your true and only Son,
And Holy Spirit, Comforter—
forever Three in One!”
You, Christ, are King of glory,
the everlasting Son,
Yet You, with boundless love,
sought to rescue ev’ryone:
You laid aside Your glory,
were born of virgin’s womb,
Were crucified for us
and were placed into a tomb;
Then by Your resurrection
You won for us reprieve—
You opened heaven’s kingdom
to all who would believe.
You sit in splendid glory,
enthroned at God’s right hand,
Upholding earth and heaven
by forces You command.
We know that You will come
as our Judge that final day,
So help Your servants You
have redeemed by blood, we pray;
May we with saints be numbered
where praises never end,
In glory everlasting.
Amen, O Lord, amen!
OFFERING
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
KYRIE “Lord, Have Mercy” 227
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.
LORD’S PRAYER 227
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
SALUTATION 227
O Lord, hear my prayer.
And let my cry come to You. Psalm 102:1
COLLECT OF THE DAY
Heavenly Father, we give thanks for Your gifts to The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod for the past 175 years. Chiefly do we thank You for the gift of Jesus Christ, who alone is our salvation. By His death, You have atoned for our sins; by His resurrection, You have justified us; and by His Word and Holy Spirit, You have brought the Gospel of peace to us. We give thanks that for 175 years in the congregations of our Synod, You have richly and daily forgiven the sins of believers. Not unto us, but unto Your name, O Lord, be glory!
We implore You, O Lord, to sanctify and keep the congregations, schools and organizations together with all our people in the truth. Your Word is truth. Preserve us from false teaching; bring us to repentance for every place where love or zeal has faltered; grant us and our children bold and steadfast hearts to remain faithful to this confession and church, suffering all rather than to fall away from it; and unite us with all Christians in a true confession of Jesus Christ, in whom the world has redemption: the forgiveness of sins.
Lord, in Your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
ADDITIONAL COLLECTS OF INTERCESSION
COLLECT FOR GRACE 228
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
BENEDICAMUS and BENEDICTION 228
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14
Amen.
HYMN “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” 655
Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word;
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would wrest the kingdom from Your Son
And bring to naught all He has done.
Lord Jesus Christ, Your power make known,
For You are Lord of lords alone;
Defend Your holy Church that we
May sing Your praise eternally.
O Comforter of priceless worth,
Send peace and unity on earth.
Support us in our final strife
And lead us out of death to life.
