Divine Service, Setting One

HYMN “Dearest Jesus, We Are Here” 592: 1,2,3

Dearest Jesus, we are here,
Gladly Your command obeying;
With this child we now draw near
In response to Your own saying
That to You he shall be given
As a child and heir of heaven.

Your command is clear and plain,
And we would obey it duly:
“You must all be born again,
Heart and life renewing truly,
Born of water and the Spirit,
And my Kingdom thus inherit.”

Therefore we have come to You,
In our arms this infant bearing.
Truly here Your grace we view,
May this child, Your mercy sharing,
In Your arms be shielded ever,
Yours on earth and Yours forever.

HOLY BAPTISM of Cameron John Fraser (8:00)

Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:18b-19 And the apostle Peter has written, “Baptism now saves you.” 1 Peter 3:21

The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death, and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and grace has sent His Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

How are you named?

Cameron John Fraser, receive the sign of the holy cross, both upon your forehead and upon your heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified.

Let us pray.

Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You preserved believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all.

You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and all his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Holy Baptism.

Through the Baptism in the Jordan of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin.

We pray that You would behold Cameron according to Your boundless mercy and bless him with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in him that has been inherited from Adam and which he himself has committed since, would be drowned and die.

Grant that he would be kept safe and secure in the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all believers in Your promise, he would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark:

And they were bringing children to Jesus that He might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the children comes to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And He took them in His arms and blessed them, laying His hands on them.  (Mark 10:13-16)

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Together as the people of God we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even evermore.
Amen.

Cameron, do you renounce the devil and all his works and ways?
I do renounce them.

Do you believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth?
Yes, I believe.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, descended into hell and on the third day rose again from the dead? Do you believe He ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, and will come from thence to judge the living and the dead?
Yes, I believe.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
Yes, I believe.

Do you desire to be baptized?
Yes, I do.

Cameron John Fraser, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting.
Amen.

Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ, who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.

In Holy Baptism God has made you co-heirs with us of all the treasures of heaven. We receive you in Christ’s name as a brother in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us all out of darkness, into His marvelous light.

Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord.

HYMN “Dearest Jesus, We Are Here”592: 4,5

Gracious Head, Your member own;
Shepherd, take your lamb and feed him;
Prince of Peace, make here Your throne;
Way of Life, to heaven lead him.
Precious vine, let nothing sever
From Your side this branch forever.

Now into Your heart we pour
Prayers that from our hearts proceeded.
Our petitions heavenward soar;
May our hearts’ desires be heeded!
Write the name we now have given;
Write it in the book of heaven!

The 8:00 service continues with the invocation. The 10:30 service begins here.

INVOCATION 151

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

CONFESSION and DECLARATION OF GRACE

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:1-2; Philippians 1:6

Amen.

Offering forgiveness, Comfort, and joy.

SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, defend Your Church from all false teaching and error that Your people may confess You to be the only true God and rejoice in Your good gifts of life and salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

KIDS TALK

OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 29:11-19

And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
therefore, behold, I will again
do wonderful things with this people,
with wonder upon wonder;
and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel,
whose deeds are in the dark,
and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”
You turn things upside down!
Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,
that the thing made should say of its maker,
“He did not make me”;
or the thing formed say of him who formed it,
“He has no understanding”?

Is it not yet a very little while
until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?
In that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a book,
and out of their gloom and darkness
the eyes of the blind shall see.
The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord,
and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Ephesians 5:22-33

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE 156

Alleluia! Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
Alleluia, alleluia!

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 7:1-13

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter.
Glory to You, O Lord.

Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.

HYMN “Built on the Rock” 645: 1,3,5

Built on the Rock the Church shall stand
Even when steeples are falling.
Crumbled have spires in every land;
Bells still are chiming and calling,
Calling the young and old to rest,
But above all the souls distressed,
Longing for life everlasting.

We are God’s house of living stones,
Built for His own habitation.
He through baptismal grace us owns
Heirs of His wondrous salvation.
Were we but two His name to tell,
Yet He would deign with us to dwell
With all His grace and His favor.

Grant, then, O God, Your will be done,
That, when the church bells are ringing,
Many in saving faith may come
Where Christ His message is bringing:
“I know my own; My own know Me.
You, not the world, My face shall see.
My peace I leave with you. Amen.”

SERMON

Rev. Dr. R. Lee Hagan, president
Missouri District — The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod

APOSTLES’ CREED 159 (10:30)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

in the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

LORD’S PRAYER 162 (10:30)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. HYMN “God’s Word Is Our Great Heritage” 582

God’s Word is our great heritage
And shall be ours forever;
To spread its light from age to age

We keep its teachings pure
Throughout all generations.
