entrusted to a faithful creator. sermon for the seventh sunday of easter. Rev. Gregory Mech. Immanuel Lutheran Church LCMS. Joplin, Missouri. I am praying for them.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 4:12–19; 5:6–11 is the text for Today’s Sermon from Pastor Mech entitled, “Entrusted to a Faithful Creator.”

Invocation

God says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” Psalm 50:14

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. Psalm 145:18

It is good, Lord, to be here.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Psalm 100:4

Confession and Absolution

Saint Peter writes, “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your cares on Him, for He cares for you.”

Silent Reflection and Self-Examination

Merciful Father in heaven,

Look upon us in mercy, for we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. You warned us that “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”; despite Your warning, we have fallen prey to sin. Forgive us for the sake of Your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Though you have trials and burdens to bear, you need not carry the burden of your sins, for Christ bore that burden for you, and rose victorious over sin, death, Satan and hell on Easter morning. By the command of the same Jesus Christ, my Lord, and by His authority, I, His called and ordained servant, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen. Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Introit

  I will sing of steadfast love and justice;

    to you, O Lord, I will make music.

  Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

    Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!

  Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his |pasture.

  Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!

    Give thanks to him; bless his name!

  For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever,

     and his faithfulness to all generations.

  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

  I will sing of steadfast love and justice;

    to you, O Lord, I will make music.

Epistle 1 Peter 4:12–19; 5:6–11

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And

“If the righteous is scarcely saved,

        what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Verse

  Alleluia. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.

  Alleluia. Jesus promised: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” Alleluia.

Holy Gospel John 17:1–11

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

  Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” LSB 656, vs. 1-2

A mighty fortress is our God,

A trusty shield and weapon;

He helps us free from every need

That hath us now o’er-taken.

The old evil foe Now means deadly woe.

Deep guile and great might

Are his dread arms in fight;

On earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done.

Soon were our loss effected;

But for us fights the valiant One,

whom God Himself elected.

Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is,

Of Sabaoth Lord,

and there’s none other God;

He holds the field forever.

Sermon – “Entrusted to a Faithful Creator”

Rev. Gregory Mech, Pastor

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church featuring responsive singing of Hymn 770

What a friend we have in Jesus,

All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit;

Oh, what needless pain we bear—

All because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer.

O God our Father in heaven, we thank and praise You for sending Your Son to be our Savior. O God our Lord Jesus Christ, we thank and praise You for glorifying Your Father by completing the work He gave you to do. O God the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, we thank and praise You for making known to us both the Father and our Lord Jesus.

Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged—

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Can we find a friend so faithful,

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness.

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

O most merciful God, when we encounter trials and temptations, send us Your comfort and strength that we might bear them. We especially pray for all who are ailing, grieving or recovering from surgery among us. Comfort them in their suffering and restore them to health of mind and body that they might serve their neighbors and give glory to You. We place into Your loving hands all who have been endured losses due to the pandemic and the attendant economic shut-down, asking that their trust in You never waver and that their needs may be met through the abundance You have given to others. And gracious God, though Your Son, Jesus Christ, came to bring us Your heavenly peace, violence and conflict have long raged on earth. Accept our thanks for those who have served in the armed forces of our country, thinking especially this day of those who did not return from such service. Give us grace, that we may honor the gift of liberty and be good citizens and neighbors to all.

Are we weak and heavy laden,

cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge—

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do your friends despise, forsake you?

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

In His arms He’ll take and shield you.

You will find a solace there.

Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

Amen.

Hymn “Lord, Dismiss Us with Your Blessing” LSB 924

Lord, dismiss us with Your blessing,

Fill our hearts with joy and peace;

Let us each, Your love possessing,

Triumph in redeeming grace.

O refresh us; O refresh us,

Traveling through this wilderness.

Thanks we give and adoration

For the Gospel’s joyful sound.

May the fruits of Your salvation

In our hearts and lives abound.

Ever faithful, ever faithful

To Your truth may we be found.

Savior, when Your love shall call us

From our struggling pilgrim way,

Let not fear of death appall us,

Glad Your summons to obey.

May we ever, may we ever

Reign with You in endless day.
